Vilebrequin Gets 'Happy!' For Its SS16 Men's Collection

Summer’s here, the sun is out and the sea is beckoning. For Vilebrequin, the French brand renowned for its luxury swimwear, this can only mean one thing: “Happy”! Naming its Spring Summer 2016 collection must’ve been a no-brainer, considering the playful prints and splashes of colour employed to convey the carefree spirit of the holidays.

It may come as a surprise to learn that Vilebrequin was founded not by a fashion designer, but by photographer and automobile journalist Fred Prysquel. Story has it that Prysquel was chilling at a café in Saint Tropez when he sketched out his dream swimsuit: a longer boxer-short style that was (quite literally) a breath of fresh air from the short and tight swimsuits of the ’70s. Brightly coloured and built in a flattering fit, the Moorea became an overnight hit with beachgoers and now serves as the brand’s signature suit.

Over four decades later, Vilebrequin is still delighting beach-loving merrymakers with its high-quality material and original designs. Made from high-density polyamide, a material hardier than polyester, these trunks are tear-resistant and dry quickly in the sun. Some of the more whimsical prints include polar bears in the middle of summer, skiing penguins and childlike doodles of fish. One Moorea design even features animals taking selfies of themselves at tourist landmarks; think a koala smiling goofily in front of the Taj Mahal and a giraffe posing at Big Ben. And of course, no matter how you like to wear your trunks – long, short, fitted or loose – there are plenty of designs featuring the brand’s turtle mascot in all its swimwear styles.

If you’re not feeling like hitting the waters this summer, Vilebrequin also offers a range of ready-to-wear pieces to give your resort ensembles an extra touch of chic. Roll up your sleeves and stay cool in the summer heat in vibrantly hued linen shirts, or keep it simple with a polo tee. Pop the collar if you must – after all, the Vilebrequin logo on the underside isn’t going to show off itself.

From $180, available at Vilebrequin at Forum Shopping Mall and The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
