You might’ve seen Carbon & Hyde’s extremely covetable diamond embellished leather chokers adorning the necks of celebrities from Miranda Kerr to Taylor Swift. This summer, the jewellery brand has crafted exclusive turquoise pieces in their capsule collection with THE OUTNET’s Summer Shop. We catch up with Yarden and Oren Katz, the creative sisters behind Carbon & Hyde, to find out more about the collection and all the fun stuff that goes behind jewellery design.

 

 

Tell us a bit about the exclusive pieces you created for THE OUTNET.

We created three turquoise pieces. Choker chains have been really in this season, so we created a pear shaped pendant and round pendant to mirror two designs from our current collection that have been really hot – our Venus Choker Chain and Bullet Choker Chain.

 

Why did you choose turquoise?

It’s the best colour for summer and looks amazing paired with diamonds. It’s a strong stone that keeps coming back – I don’t think turquoise can ever go out of style. People just love wearing it in the summer.

 

What is your favorite type of jewellery to design?

Floating diamond pieces – they give jewellery such an ethereal feel.

 

 

Seeing that all your jewellery is handmade, are there any challenges you face when employing traditional methods?

All of our jewellery is handcrafted by skilled artisans, but before it reaches them we start with a 3D computer-generated model which is based off of our hand-drawn sketches. We use the latest technology to create our jewellery, and luckily this leaves very little room for error. Our artisans are very skilled in their own craft, so they know exactly how to clean, set and polish these pieces to perfection without damaging the model. Back in the day, people used to carve their own designs out of blank wax, so it was much tougher to get each piece looking the same. It was a much more natural look, but today everyone is looking for perfection!

 

What sort of music do you listen to to help you get into the gear of designing?

We definitely bounce around different genres – we love anything from Disclosure to Drake to Rihanna.

 

What is your favourite part about the process of jewellery design?

The sketch. That’s where you get to have real fun and imagination. Once you get deeper into the design process, you move into creating the exact measurements and costing. You have to figure out what gold weight and diamond weight works with the piece so that it’s substantial and also affordable for the look.

Dead or alive, who would you like to see wearing your pieces?

Since the start of your brand, what would you say was the hardest or most important lesson you’ve learnt?

Having your own business is like a rollercoaster. Some days you’re on top of the world, and other days you’re doing so much damage control that you think the world is going to end. You have this very clear sense of responsibility when it’s your own brand – it’s like your baby and there’s no option to just give up or fail. You have to learn to expect that – that every day is different – and you have to enjoy each moment of your journey. Laugh when a design comes out and you hate it, celebrate when you get a big celebrity wearing your pieces in a magazine, and feel accomplished when you have a big day in sales. Focus on those moments and you will always be successful.

 

Finally, what advice do you have for someone who wants to break into the jewellery design business?

Design all your pieces as if they are for yourself rather than what you think people want. If you design what you think the world will want, you will have no real connection to your pieces. You have to love the piece and want to wear it, or else you won’t be able to sell it.
