Having thrilled the night away just last May, the sicker-than-your-average pop-up party, Off The Rails, is back with even more family-friendliness, pumpin’ beats, and live art. This July, we’re heading to Off The Rails Again! to keep our knickers untwisted and feathers unruffled. But if you’re still not convinced, here are six more reasons why you should hop aboard this bash.
1) YOU CAN TAKE A WALK ON THE RAILED SIDE
Venues often make or break the parties they house and in this case, a treat is in store. Off The Rails Again! puts the rails back on in the empty space beneath a viaduct structure along the now-abandoned Keretapi Tanah Melayu Railway Line. The Rail Corridor’s art space is primarily used as a location for events that deepens art awareness, so it’s stocked with wall art to tickle your visual fancy. It’s just like something out of a modern metropolitan fairy tale, minus the bridge troll (or not).
2) YOU CAN GET FRESH WITH CARIBBEAN FOOD
Lime House will be presenting a feast of authentic Caribbean food so good, you’d have to long-haul it to The Bahamas for a better deal. While you’re crunching and munching, there’ll be limited edition rum punch to help you swallow things down. But if that just doesn’t cut it, there’ll also be beer too, and soft drinks for the kiddos.
3) YOU GET TO SEE SCRIBBLERS WHO CAN RIVAL BANKSY
If your definition of stellar graffiti is limited to whatever you saw in the film, Exit Through The Gift Shop, you should know that there are lots more. Though Banksy is royalty, Off The Rails Again! features regional artists who fully deserve your attention; Indonesia’s Tuyuloveme, Hong Kong’s Cath Love, and Singapore’s Slac Satu will be among those making waves with live art performances that will definitely blow your skinnies off.
4) YOU CAN GET INTO A ‘ZEN’ STATE OF MIND
Face it, you know you’ve always wanted to dress yourself up in a zentai (y’know, those creepy, full-body skin-suits) costume. If your interest is piqued and you want in, there’ll be a zentai art superhero workshop at the festival. You’ve gotta tap into your inner ‘Quicksilver’ to register, though; slots are limited.
5) YOU CAN BUFF UP YOUR PLAYLIST WITH SOME DUBBY VIBES
With spin stars and the leaders of the Singapore reggae scene set to soundtrack this little shindig, you’re likely to find yourself picking up a track or two to add to your Spotify playlist. Kiat, co-founder of artistic collective, Syndicate, is an innovative DJ who experiments with hip-hop, dub and drum & bass. He’ll also be there to scratch a couple of sound waves, while dancehall deviants Lion Steppaz Sound and dubtronica outfit Wobology deliver block-rockin beats with their fun, pioneering spirit.
6) YOU CAN DITCH YOUR STUFFY SHELL FOR A CHANGE
Being a homebody is great – well, until the walls start to cave in. If you’re looking to expand your social circle to meet interesting, curious, like-minded individuals who like art, this would be a great place to start. The event is family-friendly, so if your shell includes kids or just really hip parents who say “Groovy Baby” on the regular, you can drag them along.
Off The Rails Again! gets chugging on Saturday, July 18 at the Rail Corridor Art Space. For more information, visit http://on.fb.me/1J5Kvd7.
