Inspired by Burberry‘s iconic black heritage trench coat, My Burberry Black sees a sensuality-drenched reinvention of the British luxury fashion house’s renowned fragrance, with Downtown Abbey actress, Lily James, at the helm of the provocative campaign. Stripping down in the Mario Testino-shot film, the brand’s latest offering is as daring as running through the rain in a trench coat with nothing underneath – precisely the kind of comparison the new fragrance seeks to evoke.
Chief Creative and Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Bailey, collaborated with perfumer, Francis Kurkdjian, on the fragrance to create a scent that fuses sun-drenched jasmine flower and peach nectar with a touch of rose for a sweet and inviting candied twist, while rich amber patchouli rounds off the scent for a deep finish. Housed in an amber-colored glass bottlethat reflects the details of the heritage trench coat, its hand-tied black English-woven knot honours the weatherproof fabric invented by Thomas Burberry over 100 years ago.
Kurkdjian explains that the fragrance was inspired by London itself, an urban garden. Despite its standing as a contemporary and vibrant city, the art of gardening is of utmost importance to the British as well. Therefore, the flowery aspect of the perfume comes from that idea of the garden after the rain, accompanied by the lush wetness and earthiness of the city. For his choice of notes, he chose roses and freesia, which add hints of spice and brightness, alongside geranium leaves for an herbal, almost minty, vibrancy to. For the base note, patchouli leaves and quince deliver a sweet, floral dry-down for a sensual harmony of scents.
