Break out the eyeliner, hair straightener, and black-striped hoodie – at long last, Sonny Moore, better known by his chart-smashing dubstep moniker Skrillex, has reunited with former emo band From First To Last for the new song, “Make War”.
Following months of speculation arising from archived band photos featuring Moore on FFTL’s social media channels, and an Instagram photo posted by Mark Hoppus in the studio with Moore and founding guitarist Matt Good, news of “Make War” dropped as a surprise announcement on Skrillex’s Twitter page, arriving on Moore’s birthday to an elated fan base. Whether Moore will rejoin the band full-time and work on further material remains to be seen.
The song, which can be played below, features a more polished sound in comparison to the band’s early material on which Moore served as lead vocalist, while delivering a more melodic dynamic compared to the band’s 2015 LP, Dead Trees. While the instrumentation features greater technicality, Moore’s vocals also demonstrate greater control, albeit a little lacking in emotion.
While the band continued after Moore’s departure with a number of line-up changes that once included Limp Bizkit’s Wes Borland on bass, and others filling on vocalist duties – including guitarist Good and Periphery vocalist Spencer Sotelo – the band’s post-Moore output was met with mixed reviews from critics and fans, often perceived as being unable to surpass the band’s breakout 2004 album, Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Body Count.
