While Paul Anka’s “My Way” has long served as an anthem for those who dare to go against the grain, the song’s autocratic symbolism has democratically lent itself to countless covers, most famously by Frank Sinatra and The Sex Pistols’ Sid Vicious. And though Ol’ Blue Eyes probably wouldn’t be jive to the slurred stylings of modern hip-hop (as much as rappers like Jay-Z align themselves with him), the old must inevitably give way to the new, and adidas Originals is ushering them in with Snoop Dogg, Desiigner and MadeinTYO performing reworks of the time-honoured tune.
Expanding on the first short film Original Is Never Finished released in January to kickstart its creator-driven campaign, the gospel choir-like chants of the brand’s campaign film are given the remix treatment in two new music videos: one by the Doggfather, and the other by mumble rap “Panda” sensation Desiigner, together MadeinTYO, the Atlanta-based rapper behind the hit “Uber Everywhere”. While the former’s legendary smooth delivery throws back to his gangsta rap roots, effortlessly name-dropping the “three stripes” without inducing cringes, the latter pair take a decidedly darker route, with Desiigner’s auto-tuned bars and signature machinegun ad-libs domineering epic horns and a stomp clamp beat.
In the same spirit of reinventing classics, Snoop Dogg’s music video throws back to his own material by bringing a live action depiction of his iconic Doggystyle album artwork, while the other sees Desiigner posed in an electric ode to St. Sebastian by Sandro Botticelli. Meanwhile, adidas Originals repurposes the NMD sneaker into haunting masks that take on a tribal, almost post-apocalyptic aesthetic.
