It’s not always necessary to be strong, but to feel strong – and honey- voiced Singaporean chanteuse Vandetta’s freshly unveiled, latest single “ONZ ” certainly packs a potent-enough punch to be an enabler of precisely that. Serving as a sneak peek into her upcoming EP, Mindkiller, the track is an elixir for days wherein restlessness and pent-up energy become overbearing outcries that demand to be heard and addressed.
In keeping with its all-round, tired-of-BS attitude, “ONZ” cuts right to the chase, immediately establishing what it’s all about, kicking off with a shattering clang that quickly gives way to a percussion-heavy terrain, which holds its ground throughout the track. Vanessa Fernandez was Vanessa Fernandez, industry stalwart and singer extraordinaire, long before she was reborn as Vandetta, and remains distinctly so in the vitality of her vocals this release.
Her vocals exude a gorgeously polished fullness that also testifies to the unquenchable spirit at the heart of this track, all of which perfectly complements featured rapper Kim Olsen’s verbal virtuosity and nimble, tongue-darting, rhythm-wrapping facility. If Fernandez is the voice that presents the truth to you with clarity, Olsen is the courage to tell it as it is.
“ONZ” maintains a wholly r&b and soul framework, enlivened by an electronic edge and rapid-fire rap cadences, but what makes it so compelling is the appeal of pop sensibilities embedded throughout, that of which renders the track as inclusively memorable as it is dynamic and empowering. It’s an assertive battle cry, and a war chant that confronts limitation – both the circumstantially foisted and the self-imposed. Have a listen for yourself below.
