Ah, it’s good to be young. Not only is there an entire month in the calendar dedicated to us young’uns, the National Youth Council will be kicking off the celebrations with the three-day event, SHINE Festival 2016, starting from July 1. Featuring more than 60 pop-up stalls and a line-up of both international and local crowd-pleasing acts, the youth-focused festival will turn the Orchard belt into an exciting playground for the young. Exclusive discounts and awesome activities will stretch all the way from *SCAPE to ION Orchard.
Hip-hop enthusiasts, keep a lookout for Korean-American rap sensation, Jay Park, who will be sharing the stage and pumping up the crowd with homegrown rapper, ShiGGA Shay. Show your support for local designers at the perennial hipster favourite, the Art Market by The Local People, or get your creative juices running at one of the many fringe activities. From fashion silk-screening to marble painting to leaving your mark on the community wall mural, there’s going to be something cool (and totally Instagrammable) for everyone to try their hand at. For those feeling peckish, put a spin on your weekend brunch routine and take your pick from an extensive range of food trucks.
New to the 11th edition of this festival will be a number of interactive media exhibitions, where music and dance, parkour, urban art and pop culture collide. As part of this year’s theme, “Your Next Stage”, this series of installations and performances will showcase the works of up-and-coming young local talents, who worked under the SHINE x *SCAPE Talent Development Programme.
Just because the term ‘youth’ is arbitrarily defined as “those between ages 15 and 35” doesn’t mean that you can’t attend the festivities. As long as you’re young-at-heart, come join in the fun.
SHINE Festival is organised by the National Youth Council and takes place from July 1 to 3. For more info, visit shine.nyc.sg.
