‘Tis the season of decking the halls, and some left-leaning local music. Two homegrown indie labels, experimental electronic bastion Syndicate and exciting newcomers Middle Class Cigars have each lifted the veil on Christmas-themed compilations featuring some of Singapore’s most decorated veterans and buzzing scene-stealers alike.
Syndicate’s Christmas In-store Music for Uniqlo comes on the back of the label’s recent collaboration with the Japanese casual-wear giant, which saw artists from its roster creating new in-store tunes for Uniqlo’s Orchard Central flagship store. Music from this project will also be playing exclusively at the same location. It’s both heartening and powerful to see disparate movers of the indie underground, such as Fauxe, Vandetta and Intriguant locking arms on cutting-edge music made to bring joy during the holidays.
Meanwhile, Middle Class Cigars brings the shimmer with A City Without Snow, a nine-track comp populated by tracks from some of the artists on its roster and others from local-scene mainstays.Look out for jangly, fuzzed-out dream pop reveries from Subsonic Eye and Pleasantry, as well as pristine, ray-of-light well wishes from onguyot and The Analog Girl. Available for streaming or purchase from the label’s site, or in cassette format, A City Without Snow is undoubtedly a sweet and strong showing by the young label.
So, this year, why don’t you give that Michael Bublé Christmas album a rest and loop up these instead?
