Years before A Bathing Ape burst onto the scene in Harajuku, there was another primate adorning the threads of forward-thinking streetwear enthusiasts in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Los Feliz. 25 years on, XLARGE remains one of the most prolific names in street culture and fashion, worn by trailblazers from the Beastie Boys’ Mike D to Pharrell Williams. Celebrating a quarter of a decade as a street OG, the original ape teams up with creative space HABITUAL – which opened late last year with an inaugural exhibition by SSUR’s Russ Karablin – for “TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF XLARGE”,an anniversary party and exhibition that puts a local spin on an American classic.
Launching on Saturday, January 14, the exhibition will showcase the works of a number of guest artists paying homage to the brand’s original gorilla logo. Having been reinterpreted in numerous iterations in the past for special collections and collaborations, the local artist’s who have been tasked with reimagining the primate come from a variety of disciplines that span digital graphic design to old-school graffiti art, including Jahan Loh, ClogTwo, Flex, Kristal Melson, the Tell Your Children collective, and many more. In addition to the exhibited works, the streetwear label will also commemorate the milestone with the True OG Streetwear book, which collates the brand’s journey and the evolution of streetwear through archival pieces and interviews with influential members of the streetwear community.
The anniversary also presents an opportunity for budding artists, with a call to entry to apply your own creative vision to the original logo. Entrants stand a chance to win limited XLARGE x HABITUAL collaborative merch and a $100 HABITUAL shopping credit voucher. Entries should be sent as .jpg or .png files to firstname.lastname@example.org by January 20, so if you’ve got a game-changing design, don’t monkey around and wait till the last minute.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF XLARGE runs from January 14 to February 18 at HABITUAL, 38 Hamilton Road. For more info, visit the official event page HERE.
