Superstar DJs are nothing without their production team. There’s nothing more awkward than decksters accumulating tension for a beat drop, only to fall smack on their faces when production hiccups anti-climatically end in darkness and crickets. Obviously, for a festival brand as monolithic as Ultra, these blunders cannot do. Which is why – even for its derivative Road To Ultra Singapore showcase – the production crew is sparing no expense in giving its thousands of ravers the full, dynamite package. From stage design to sound systems, to Gandalf-approving pyrotechnics, everything is planned under thorough scrutiny. Production Director of Ultra, Ray Steinman, gives us some exclusive insight.
1) ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE ON ITS MONUMENTAL STAGE
The stage concept and design were developed under the creative direction of Richard Milstein of Skylab Industry, Inc. and myself, through my firm, Bralco Group, Inc. The concept and design is meant to display a huge variation of LED panels while incorporating dramatic state-of-the-art lighting effects, and we make sure the concepts are always scalable for different size venues and stages. We are excited about what we have in store for Road To Ultra Singapore this year. Fans will be blown away.
2) THE VISUALS WILL HAVE YOU ON A FACE-MELTING MIND-TRIP
A massive amount of time and effort goes into the creative and production of our visuals. A lot of artistes actually take full advantage of our designs and take the time to programme their specific content to them. We work with V Squared Labs to develop our intense content and branding that you see on Road To Ultra stages across the globe.
3) ITS SOUND SYSTEM WILL BLOW YOUR SOCKS OFF
For this show, we are using JBL VTX PA, which is a top-quality live reinforcement audio system. As is typical for our shows, we require a higher-than-normal ratio of subs to mains so that the PA system can withstand the frequencies and power generated by EDM music. The crowd will really be able to feel the music.
4) THERE ARE NEVER TOO MANY LIGHTS
On this show, we have around 250 lighting fixtures.
5) ITS PYROTECHNICS WILL BE BOTH SEISMIC AND SAFE
We have relatively large budgets for pyrotechnics and special effects, as they are integral to our shows. We require our vendors to be licensed and insured, to have years of relevant experience doing this type of work, and most importantly, to be safety-conscious. For example, participating vendors must additionally meet applicable local fire codes and related requirements. There must also be fire officials on-site to test the systems prior to gates opening, and also throughout the event to monitor the vendor’s activities and safety protocols.
