Asia’s chiming in on dance music in a big way, and Thai party-starter Mendy Indigo is leading the charge. With her alluringly heady take on the darker, dirtier fringes of house that have come to define her sound since her move from hometown of Korat to the city that never sleeps, Bangkok, she’s giving us all a reason to bust out moves we never knew we had. Ahead of her set at Headquarters, the beauty lets us into her entrancing world.
What is it like being a resident DJ at Beam in Bangkok?
It’s great to be a resident DJ at Beam. Beam is a minimalistic venue with visual lighting and very good sound system, which is very important for a DJ. Beam also brings in a lot of international DJs, which is great for Bangkok’s music and nightlife scene. Being a resident DJ is also a challenge, as you want people to keep coming back to hear you play at the same venue.
What are the ingredients for your sound?
My music consists of dark and melodic beats. I also use a lot of basslines, but it really depends on the crowd and the venue. I developed my style a lot at Glow, known as Bangkok’s underground club, where I also have my monthly event called Dark & Dirty.
You’ve said that a trip to Nepal led to you discovering your passion for electronic music. Can you tell us more?
Nepal was a life changing experience for me. I traveled there with a group of German friends, and one day one of my friends asked me if I wanted to listen to his music. I said, “Yes”, and it was love at the first beat. That was the first time I listened to electronic music, a genre that was unknown to me until then. My friend kept playing more music and eventually taught me how to mix.
How do you keep your energy up the whole night?
Before I start my set, I always ask myself, “What if this was my last?”. Then I look at the crowd and I try to create the perfect set that complements the crowd and the venue. When I’m playing, I forget about everything and I just feel the people dancing in front of me. The more they dance, the more energy I get.
How does it feel to be one of the leading female DJs in Thailand? Are there many?
I feel flattered and honoured to be called one of the leading female DJs in Thailand. Yes, there are a lot of female DJs in Thailand. And if you ask me why, I would say because girls also love music.
Having performed in much of Asia, where do you hope to visit next?
There are still places in Asia that I haven’t performed in. Tokyo would be my next most-wanted destination in Asia, while Berlin for Europe, as they both have a large underground music scene.
You posted an article on Facebook that matched famous DJs to characters from Game of Thrones. Are you a GoT fan?
YES, I am a huge GoT geek! I love Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons, because she’s inexperienced as a leader – and she leaves people around her in an unexpected awe.
Catch Mendy Indigo at Headquarters on July 30.
