Just as Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster and Bowie-inspired Starman have left the Earth for good, Off-White and Art Dad LLC’s capsule collection has entered our stratosphere. Centred on the theme Space is the Place, the collaborative effort furthers the notion of the “Art Dad” while taking Virgin Abloh‘s luxury streetwear line into cosmic territory.
What on earth is an Art Dad, you ask? The idea reportedly stemmed from a conversation between Art Dad LLC’s co-founders, Tremaine Emory (aka Denim Tears) and DJ Acyde of sound/style collective No Vacancy Inn, at Kanye West’s Madison Square Garden fashion show. Inspired by West’s newfound responsibility as a father and remaining effortlessly stylish to tackle the job at hand, the notion of the Art Dad was born – a graduation from youth culture without dropping passion for fashion altogether.
Speaking with Dazed, Emory shares that, “Art Dad is a reaction to everything being about ‘youth youth youth,'” adding that, “There’s something to be said for being responsible, having health care (speaking for Americans), taking care of business but still having fun.” Now that you’ve got an introduction to what an Art Dad is, we turn our focus to the present collection that embodies the lifestyle.
Musing upon the stars and musical interpretations of outer space, the capsule collection sees a number of tees and hoodies steeped in retrofuturism, with statement pieces that include a star-speckled bomber jacket, galactic jumpsuit, and silver vest that takes on the appearance of a space blanket. With a wide range of inspirational references that include span jazz masters Miles Davis and Sun Ra, to cinematic feats like Godard’s Alphaville and Duncan Jones’ Moon, the unique collection reiterates our fascination with the past’s imagination of the future.
