Having stepped into sci-fi territory for the recent “Robot” music video, The Sam Willows are back with the second visual accompaniment to their double-barrelled single release, this time for “Papa Money”.
Equal parts silly, strange and cryptic, the fun-fuelled video sees Singapore’s pop darlings adopting a number of different roles, each packing plenty of flex. From sporting fur coats and conspicuously flaunting the “hustle” to becoming costumed music icons and luchadors, “Papa Money” is reminiscent of the wacky weirdness depicted in “Keep Me Jealous”, with the reprisal of the jawbreaker-looking, anatomically incorrect octopus mascot.
Call us old-fashioned, but while we all have to hustle one way or another, a Bulgari-sponsored advertisement before the heavily product-sponsored main event – you should really consider dropping some bones on a fuego ring pendant necklace, by the way – might be overkill. But the quartet are making it known that these luxuries come from hard work and not hand-outs from mommy and daddy, captured in the lyrics, “I’ve been up working all night / White kicks gold surge we alright / Papa money didn’t buy me things / Papa money didn’t buy me those things.” Respect.
If you still think it’s been all peaches and cream for The Sam Willows, hear what they had to say about the sacrifices they’ve made in our video interview below.
