Sing Jazz is back, jiving its way onto our shores in a blaze of groovy glory. After a spectacular debut last year, the creative extravaganza’s bringing in a dynamic array of renowned artistes yet again – from vocal powerhouse Jessie J to instrumental collective Snarky Puppy. Come March 5, the rhythmic be-bop beats of international luminaries will be taking over our glittering Marina Bay Sands, dishing up music to feed the soul.
For all you fanatics who just can’t shake that true-blue jazz spirit, the stellar line-up promises to thrill, with the likes of trumpet maestro Chris Botti and British saxophonist Courtney Pine. Festivalgoers also have a good excuse to dress up, with an exclusive opening gala night headlined by R&B veteran Chaka Khan, Incognito and Richard Bona.
For the uninitiated, there’s no better place to get a handle on the jazz scene. Ever found yourself whistling along to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”? Then blues legend Bobby McFerrin’s feel-good experiments in a capella should sound familiar. With an 10 Grammy awards under his belt, you know you’re in good hands to bop the night away. There’ll be no shortage of that infectious energy as pianist Ramsey Ferris and acid stars Brand New Heavies also take to the stage as well.
And of course, what’s Sing Jazz without a little Lion City lovin’? Soulful singer-songwriter Charlie Lim and The Black Swan regulars The Steve McQueens are amongst the homegrown acts jazzing it up alongside big names like Cultural Medallion winner Jeremy Monteiro. Not too bad for a nascent festival, if you ask us. The three-day showcase also turns the spotlight on regional icons, with Malaysian music industry sensation Yuna coming on board.
Sing Jazz will be jazzing up Singapore from March 5 to 8. Opening Gala Night tickets from $80; individual day tickets from $125. Proceeds will go towards supporting the Foundation for the Arts & Social Enterprise (FASE) to promote up-and-coming artistes. For more information, visit sing-jazz.com.
