Lion City-based three-piece Iman’s League has been making crowd-moving anthems for the last decade, and their recently released fourth album, The Only Way Is Up, delivers yet again on the upbeat sounds of pop-punk and punk rock. However, 10 years is also a lot of time in which the band has had to bear the brunt of nasty comments and spiteful sentiment (Taylor Swift ain’t the only one, y’know). In their new music video for “Piece of Mind”, the band addresses the issue with the exact kind of tongue-in-cheek optimism that we’d expect.
Taking up toy instruments and literally tearing down the kinds of hurtful words that plague countless musicians’ efforts, the song looks at how easy it is for listeners to criticise without putting anything on the line. On the other hand, it captures the notion that persevering through such criticism, and sending one’s creative efforts out into the world to be endlessly judged, is still a noble pursuit. Giving haters the middle finger in the politest way possible, the trio chant, “Without you, we are doing just fine/Don’t you worry, we don’t need your piece of mind“. That’s how you stand your ground, while staying classy.
