Quickly following the release of “Hephaestus”, the first single off the hotly anticipated album TERRARIUM, neo-soul savants The Steve McQueens release their irresistibly smooth second single, “Sun”, into the digital ether and your earholes.
Straight off the bat, the slow bedroom number sees keyboardist Joshua Wan lulling the listener with a sensual progression, backed by bassist Jae Sng and Aaron James Lee’s infectious groove that puts anyone within earshot into a romantic side-step. Frontwoman Eugenia Yip AKA Ginny Bloop effortlessly takes you away to a smoke-filled lounge club as soon as her vocal work kicks in, before the band dives into jazzier, more progressive territory.
Following a recent performance at Esplanade Recital Studio to coincide with the release of “Hephaestus”, the second single gives us further insight into the complex sounds we can expect on the band’s second LP, slated for release in September. Though the album and first single explore Greek mythology, the band has stated that it’s as much about their love for sneakers: “For us, recording TERRARIUM was really about looking inward and finding futility in solitude; then, fully resigned to recommit to the relationships that constitute this life, we go out and buy some new kicks. This is the soundtrack for buying sneakers.”
