But we know it can be difficult to find a nice quite chill-out lounge the city of hustle (Singapore) and that is why we have curated a list of our favourite bar hangs right here in the ’65’. These places are special in their own right, but no matter your taste for night out, they would have something that would suit you.
28 HongKong Street
Having been around since 2011 and modelled on the influential New York speakeasy bars, 28 HongKong Street is no definitely no stranger to the F&B scene. The speakeasy cocktail joint has clinched numerous awards both locally and internationally. 28HKS is best known for their innovative, flavour-forward tipples, alongside nibbles that compliment the drinks stunningly. (The Mac ‘n’ Cheese balls are like a little piece of heaven in your mouth). 28HKS have proven to still be invariably at the top of their game, so head on down for a vibin’ good time.
A grand lobby and bar, Atlas graces the ground floor of Singapore’s iconic building, Parkview Square (Singapore’s ‘Gotham’ building). The art décor in Atlas is breathtaking but what makes this Gatsby-esque bar so special is the three-story high tower/chiller that houses the most diverse and thoughtfully curated gins – consisting of more than 1,000 gins in all. It’s safe to say that Atlas is dizzy for gin and you are sure to have an exquisitely good time in the razzle-dazzle space.
Crackerjack is one of the new kids on the block at Tanjong Pagar, brought to you by seasoned cocktail artisans who are also responsible for 28 HongKong Street and Proof & Company Spirits. With a comprehensive dining menu, Crackerjack has an all-day dining concept that offers you everything – from coffee to cocktails. Crackerjack exudes an au naturel feel with full-length windows for plenty of natural sunlight to come through which creates a warm space. And, they also have a shuffleboard! Whether it’s for work or play, Crackerjack will definitely cater to your needs.
Crowned best cocktail bar this year on the list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars is Manhattan – a grand hotel bar with a touch of New York glam that sits on the second floor of Regent Singapore. From a range of meticulously well-crafted cocktails to forgotten classic cocktails, accompanied by gourmet bites, you’re definitely going to be spoilt for choice. Overall, the infusion of old and modern New York creates an entirely unique atmosphere.
Experimenting with commercial foraging, Native definitely takes the cake for most creative cocktail bar. Run by Vijay Mudaliar, its nestled away on Amoy Street. Vijay thrives on self-sustainability, getting enough ingredients while not ruining the environment. In one of the cocktails, Vijay uses Thai crunchy ants which he forages for in Thailand. That’s right, ants in your cocktail! Head down to Native for an experience like no other, with exclusive cocktails.
Inspired by flavours of Tokyo, Neon Pigeon is definitely not your ordinary izakaya. This izakaya is decked out with urban grit and hip décor, exuding a laid-back and cozy space. Japanese food lovers can indulge in the izakaya-style menu crafted by head chef Justin Hammond, accompanied by adventurous Japanese-inspired cocktails. And, not forgetting sake. Loads of sake.
Tucked away in a basement at a corner of Ann Siang Hill you can find Operation Dagger. Keep your eyes open because Operation Dagger’s entrance is marked with just a small crown shape overlapping a rectangle and a darkened staircase down to the basement bar. Owner Luke Whearty is in charge of cocktails and makes use of house-made meads and house-infused spirits. Operation Dagger is a whole new experience on its own, with special fermented concoctions and truly intriguing experiments.
Just along the river of Boat Quay you can find Skinny’s Lounge – a reminiscent of an American dive bar. Owner-bartender Nick Haas started this to create a space for after-hour drinks for those in the F&B industry and till date, the American KTV is well loved by folks of all kinds. The perfect place to go for an after-work boilermaker (or five), there’s no doubt you’ll have an incredible night filled with solid vibes here.
There’s no doubt the Tippling Club delivers avant-garde cuisine but along with that comes world-class cocktails. Chef-Owner Ryan Clift is known to bring fun and playful modern gastronomy to the table. Head bartender Joe Schofield created the “Sensorium menu”, a truly innovative and experimental cocktail menu that blur the lines between kitchen and bar. Don’t miss out on a truly immersive experience that’s sure to tantalise your taste buds.
The Other Room
Led by Master Bartender Dario Knox, The Other Room is a drinking house inspired by the Prohibition Era. The dimly lit cocktail den carries over 150 exquisite spirits but the concept of in-house cask finishing products is what makes The Other Room so special. This sleek drinking house is a destination of elegance, a must visit.
