Trap has been upwardly trending for a minute now. And amongst the indie sect, so has jazz. On his fourth and best album, 2016’s Atrocity Exhibition, Danny Brown showed how both worlds could be twinned and mined for an uncompromisingly open look at the bleakest, darkest states of one’s psyche. But before that, Virginia multi-instrumentalist Masego was distilling both into an irrepressibly fun and soulful imprint. And thanks to relentlessly progressive party-thrower Moonbeats Asia, he’s due to treat us to the good stuff live at the Kilo Lounge on November 13.
Famed and respected for his live looping of his main weapon, the saxophone, Masego has signed off on sublimely vibey collaborations with fellow indie tinkerer-genius FKJ and house-reconfiguring rapper GoldLink. As an artist equipped with his own good-time-proffering alchemy, Masego is a guarantee that his first-ever showing here will be something worth making the time for.
