Functional yet fashionable? The perceived traditional antonyms. Now, UNIQLO has revolutionised our understanding with UNIQLO U, setting the bar for the finest blend of fashion and comfort. Designed by Christophe Lemaire, the artistic director of the Japanese brand's Paris Research and Development Centre, the upcoming collection will see a burst of swank and style add to UNIQLO’s legacy of elevated basics.
Finely traversing a palette of jewel shades against passive muted neutrals, such as grey, green, navy, black and white, the modish sportswear appeal of the collection is apparent. The current trend for interchangeable sportswear and streetwear, where practical functionality is amalgamated with fashion and comfort, is but a mere impediment for Lemaire, whose prolonged history of designs has perennially articulated comfort with style.
The collection utilises fuller and denser materials like heavy cotton and lambswool on more articulated, yet enduring, designs, from hoodies and drawstring-waist pants to knits, culminating in a sophisticated nonpareil of the brand's LifeWear philosophy. Exceptional pieces include knitwear, crewneck sweaters and cashmere turtlenecks, while puffer jackets and military-style coats highlight the outerwear range. Quilted scarfs, sling bags and mittens also make up the collection's winter-appropriate accessories.
Lemaire’ s Fall/Winter 2016 collection is exemplified by the notion of straddling the luxury market and basic fundamentals of UNIQLO’s identity, staying true to their motto of “Made for All”. The result is refined pieces that are functional and accessible for the masses, proving to be undeniable staples for the cooler seasons.
The first batch of the UNIQLO U collection is available exclusively at UNIQLO Orchard Central and online at uniqlo.com/sg. The second batch of items will launch on November 25. Prices range from $19.90 to $249.90.
